Often new caregivers don’t think that they’ll run into a time when they won’t have anything to talk to their friends about, but it can happen easily. As caregiving becomes more and more a part of your daily life, you might find that to be all you’re talking about. Having other topics you can talk about with your friends can help you to keep those relationships going.
You Can Talk about Caregiving
It’s a common misconception that you can’t really talk about caregiving with your friends. You actually can. This is especially the case if your friends are also on their own caregiving journey. The thing is, you may not want to talk exclusively about caregiving with your friends unless that’s an understanding you have with that particular friend. Your friends care about you and they want to know about what is going on in your life, so don’t be afraid to ever mention caregiving.
Keep up with Current Happenings
Current events are always a good conversational topic. Try to keep up with local and national news as much as you can, even if that’s just a quick glance at headlines. If nothing else, the conversation can involve you asking your friend if she knows more about a particular topic and then discussing it further.
Remember Your Hobbies
Hobbies are another excellent, neutral topic if you’re trying to avoid talking about caregiving. This can also help you to keep in touch with your interests so that you don’t forget them completely while you’re busy being a family caregiver. If your friends have some particularly interesting hobbies, ask more about those hobbies. You might find something new that you want to try or explore.
Make a List of Topics
If talking about anything other than caregiving is difficult for you to do, don’t beat yourself up about it. Caregiving is a large part of your life right now and that can mean it’s the only thing on your mind. Start making a list of things you can talk about with other people that doesn’t include caregiving. Sometimes during a conversation, your mind can go blank, but with a list you can always refer to it later and have something to talk about.
Ask your friends more questions about their lives, too. You might find additional topics just from what your friends want to share with you.
